Debatebly, No. I would say Dizzy is much harder than Woody to transcribe. Both are incredibly difficult to xscribe due to the fact they dont play nescessarily in the key the music calls for. If there is a C7 chord, none of them interpret it as a mixolydian scale so it is hard to find that specific note set that they are playing on.

That's true ucdtirr... I found it's much easier to first learn his solos by ear - don't slow them down, because that takes away his intention. Once you develop an ear for Woody, it should become easy to transcribe his work since he used a lot of the same licks in may of his solos.

Thats because Woody mastered playing pentatonic scales and intervals in fourths and integrated them into his improvisations. We are so used to hearing music played in scales with "7ths" and intervals in thirds that unless you know what Woody was doing its near impossible to hear and thereby transcribe.

Fab sketch. I see it as an allegory. These artists and the Sovereign? Wilde wrote about artistic freedom and conceived the artist as being antinomian - i.e. "as being above the law," so to speak. And that is clearly happening here: Oscar, George, and James are slapping one another with lilies in front of the King - for whom one feels rather sorry: for Him to be at their mercy, incapable to keep up with their duel of wits.

I don't know how anybody dives at these depths. Given the pressure that deep, just expanding your chest to breathe deeply enough would take conscious effort. Perhaps recovering bodies at these depths should be compared to recovering bodies on Mt. Everest. It's just too difficult and dangerous.

Trying not to be hindsight-biased about this, because i don't know the full story on the setup to this recovery operation, BUT couldn't dave have done one more "recon" dive before attempting the recovery? how many times did he asses the ite beforehand? he had been consulted on what state the body would be in, told it would be negatively bouyant. but now we know it was not. should he have known that based on the state of the body's wetsuit?

@15CenterMass You know it's funny I even read that...I was browsing through some diving literature that I was given by a mate and found all about the story. After the first line of the article I was hooked on the story. It's tragic but amazing. 271m on a rebreather to recover a body that has been lost for 10 years, almost sounded like Hollywood. Of course Dave was a Tec Diver, a very good one, but with Tec Diving, you're on your own and it was one silly little mistake that cost him his life! :(

@WolfieTed that was what i found out too, your right... originally i commented before i researched the event and other spects of diving science and what have you... so i guess i should retract my comment about another diver going after him, but realistcly wouldnt someone else have made a later attempt... people were clearly diving and im guessing they were mapping this cave, so someone else would have come across the scene of the mishap right? or would the next guy have used better judgement?

Its my understanding that it was dreyers body that was positively boyant because he hadnt decomposed like they thot, not just skeletal, instead the inside of his suit was filled with partly docomposed remains, david freed it from the mud it began to float and that created the difficulties that caused david's death. dreyer lifted david?

The body he was told would stay negatively buoyant by experts because the body was bones in the exposed areas, but inside the suit the flesh had turned to a soapy material which made the body float when he unclipped the equiptment, this cause him to struggle to regain control and ulimately caused his death. If only he had considered that the body would float?

@Festerico okay so i've done my homework, and what i find dificult to understand is why shaw went down alone, he should have had a partner, which i have discovered isnt always much help. Dreyer was with other divers setting up a dive for record holder nuno gomez ten years earlier when he died. shaw, happened upon his body by chance, or was he looking for his remains? was he dving the same cave to set a record or explore it? @15CenterMass Not really, Don Shirley was about to but during the descent one of his computers imploded forcing him to surface. The reason we have the footage is because Daves body was positively boyant so if floated to the top of the cave, and because he was tangled with Deones body, he dragged it up with him. Both were recovered while they were retrieving the rest of the gear. Everyone all this is in the book Raising the Dead, and Don Shirley is on Facebook, you can ask him yourself..;)

@Eileen1677 uhm, i'm not a diver and i do things i love all the time, many of them are dangerous to... just because you strap a tank on your back and enter a hostile enviroment doesnt make you special. Quite the opposite, it just makes you NORMAL... you are adventurous, JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. you know why david really died? because people cant breath under water... i feel for the family but his decision was stupid and his friends should have stopped him, they are just dodging the guilt.

I was more discussing the bands they had at that time. Although I'm not too impressed by the commercial recordings, the Artie Shaw big band in live broadcasts and on these soundies to me plays better then any other band in that year, 1939. But if we compare the players I can go along with you for a large part, except of course the most upper register. What Artie achieves there, I mean the ease and melodic logic, was never equalled. I prefer his sound as well, but that is just personal. BB

Well... Benny lost several great musicians but still great until 1942.After that...bof... One thing change in Benny when Artie come on the lights...his sound! His sound are more smooth.Like Artie! But still swing! Il like Artie!he was great!i have all of his discs! But for me, no contest! Benny was better in technique. Better to his sound production. Better in growls,lip gliss etc... This is great. Playing is great, acoustics is great. Young Buddy Rich on drums... just wow. In fact this was at that date the best big band in the business. In 1939 Benny Goodman had lost several key stars. Duke Ellington had not yet got his excellent line up together. (I mean with Ben Webster and Jimmy Blanton) On Oh Lady Be Good from this year Artie even outswings the Basie band! The only sad thing is that Artie had this for a very short time.

I was on the wrong side of this equation because a girlfriend used to sing this song and she always sang "eight new strings," as I guess she thought it made sense (as did I) because of the eight strings on the Jazz guitar. Well, first I'd like to say that I'm a 22 year old who's seen Styx 2 or 3 times. I saw thenm back in the early 90's before Dennis left and I also saw them after he left. They are amazing live, they do great shows, have great stage shows and sound amazing while live. Second, I just wanted to put an amusing tid-bit in here, this exact concert (intro to this song and everything) is part of a live 2-disc cd set entitled Arch Allies, and is both Styx and REO Speedwagon! She was of course Bishop Mason widow and third much younger wife, his first divorced him because he answer the call to preach and the mother of his children (2nd wife) passed back in the 1940s. In my country (Mexico) there is not music like this, people only hear fuckin' reggaeton and pop music, there is no good singers and much less artists like this two guys, so I'm very glad to hear Shaw Blades right now, this song like me too much since i've heard for the first time in 2004. I'm not really sure why everybody has got to have a big band now. Particularly when there is no attention paid to the legacy of the genre. Why not just say I'm gonna have a bunch of great improvisers get in each others way. I could listen to any (well almost any) of these guys play with a small group forever. Woody is so amazing. He doesn't even let the idiocy of non-musical promoters get in his way.

Love Woody Shaw. Once he fully shook the deep influence of Hubbard's playing and began to develop his own ideas, particular what he learned while playing with Dolphy, he took his deserved place in the pantheon of Trumpet greats who preceeded him like Brown, Morgan, Little & Hubbard. In my opinion only Charles Tolliver is in his class of all the post Little/Morgan/Hubbard trumpeters to emerge on the scene, but Shaw is more of an innovator.

@miguelcohete Not quite, John Milius wrote the full speech and it was about 8 pages of script, what Shaw did was just edit it down to a more manageable length for the film. And it took 2 days to film it. The first day Shaw was ripped on scotch, then apologized to Spielberg and they refilmed it the next day, Shaw was stone sober and it was edited so well you couldn't tell which was the drunk take and which was the sober take!

I don't know, Zonty. It was a fancy dress party and she was dressed as a nurse from MASH. Her old manager, Evie Taylor was there with her. Sadly, Evie has died now. It was a great part and a lot of stars were there including Rod Stewart with Britt Ekland and even Marc Bolan and Glloria Jones were there. Marc died the following year.

Ivanbeery, To hopefully answer some of your questions. Yes she did met Bishop Charles H. Mason. She was his muscian and choir director before she began full time evangelism in 1954, he mentored her even when she began evangelism. She wrote a book back in1994 title"Pray" and in the introduction of the book she gives a brief biography of her life that may answer some of your question, also I'm not sure if you can get a copy of this book in COGIC bookstore or not.

This is a valid point as far as those that enjoy gossiping and being judgemental. I'm not sure. I attended the homegoing service at Temple of Deliverance aka Bountiful Blessings in Memphis, TN Elder Milton Hawkins church. The church the late Bishop G.E. Patterson pastored and founded. So I would check there. But they do have audio tapes of Mother Shaw from the 90's. She often came to TN 4th Jurisdictional Convocation.

Thanks for posting this clip. It the the earliest existing footage of Buddy Rich. Recorded in June 1939. He's 21 years old here. At this point in his life he had been already been playing drums professionally for 19 years. Thank God for Buddy Rich :-)

This music is NOT dead! It's been getting slowly revived over the last 20 years or so. The secular radio pumps us full with crap, but there's swing and jazz and blue clubs popping up in a few areas again. And kids learning to dance it. :) It's not dead. Not in the least. And it's to this day, IMO, still the best period in musical history. Pure music, just the talent and the notes and nothing else to cover it up. Either you had it, or you didn't. :)

I saw Styx at a private concert in Kauai in October. It reignited my love for them. I hope to see Shaw Blades someday. I got a picture with Tommy the morning after the concert at the airport...the band was heading to Honolulu. He was so nice and so easy to talk to. One of life's great moments!!!
